Before concluding that your battery is dead, it’s worth understanding what’s actually draining it — because in many cases, a few setting changes can genuinely add an hour or two to your daily charge.
Here are twelve practical, specific tips. Not the vague “turn down brightness” advice you’ve already read — these come with explanations so you understand why they work.
1. Enable Optimised or Adaptive Battery Charging
Both iPhone and Android now have a feature that learns your daily charging habits and prevents your phone from sitting at 100% charge for long periods.
iPhone: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and turn on “Optimised Battery Charging.” Your iPhone will learn when you typically wake up and will hold charging at 80% overnight, only topping up to 100% just before your alarm.
Android (Samsung): Settings > Battery and Device Care > Battery > More Battery Settings > “Protect battery” — this caps charging at 85% to preserve long-term health.
Why it matters: lithium-ion batteries experience the most chemical stress at the very top and very bottom of their charge range. Sitting at 100% connected to a charger isn’t just unnecessary — it’s slowly degrading your battery’s capacity. This setting is one of the best things you can do for long-term battery health.
2. Keep Charge Between 20% and 80% Where Possible
Related to the above — the “sweet spot” for lithium-ion chemistry is the middle of the charge range. The chemistry is most stable here, and the battery ages most slowly. Regularly charging from 10% to 100% puts more stress on the cells than topping up frequently throughout the day.
In practice, this means plugging in when you hit 20-30% and unplugging (or using optimised charging) before it sits at 100% for hours. It doesn’t have to be exact — this is a long-term health strategy, not a daily obsession.
3. Let Auto-Brightness Do Its Job
The display is the single biggest power consumer on a smartphone. Keeping it brighter than necessary drains the battery fast.
iPhone: Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness (on). Also enable True Tone if your phone supports it.
Android: Settings > Display > Adaptive Brightness (on).
Auto-brightness uses the ambient light sensor to set the screen just bright enough for conditions. In a dark room, it dims significantly. In bright sunlight, it brightens. This is more efficient than any manual setting you’d choose, because most people set manual brightness for the worst-case environment and leave it there.
4. Switch Off 5G When You Don’t Need It
5G connectivity is genuinely faster for data, but the radio hardware required draws significantly more power than 4G. If you’re not streaming large files or doing something that genuinely benefits from 5G speeds, keeping it on is just wasting battery.
iPhone: Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data — switch to LTE.
Android/Samsung: Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Mode — select 4G or LTE.
Many people find that switching to 4G on a heavy day adds a noticeable amount of charge by evening — particularly in areas with patchy 5G coverage, where the phone is constantly searching for a 5G signal that isn’t reliably there.
5. Turn Off Background App Refresh for Apps That Don’t Need It
Background App Refresh allows apps to update their content in the background, even when you’re not using them. News apps, social media, and weather apps use this to have fresh content ready when you open them. But most apps don’t actually need to do this constantly.
iPhone: Settings > General > Background App Refresh. You can turn it off entirely or disable it app by app. Turn it off for apps like games, utilities, and any app you don’t open expecting fresh content.
Android: Settings > Apps > select the app > Battery > Restrict background activity. This varies slightly by manufacturer.
6. Switch From Push to Fetch for Email
“Push” email means your phone is constantly connected to the mail server, waiting to receive messages the moment they arrive — like keeping a door open at all times. “Fetch” means your phone checks for new email on a schedule you set.
iPhone: Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data. Switch from Push to Fetch, and set a fetch interval of 15 or 30 minutes. Unless you need real-time email alerts for work, you’ll rarely notice the difference — and your battery will thank you.
7. Audit Which Apps Have Always-On Location Access
Location services are one of the most significant hidden battery drains. Many apps request “Always” location access — meaning they track your location even when you’re not using them. This keeps the GPS radio active and burns through your battery in the background.
iPhone: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Go through the list and change any app that says “Always” to “While Using” unless you have a specific reason for always-on access (navigation apps like Google Maps often need it; most others don’t).
Android: Settings > Location > App Permissions. Look for apps with “Allow all the time” and question whether each one genuinely needs it.
8. Turn On Reduce Motion
This one is primarily an iOS tip. The visual animations and parallax effects on iPhone use processing power and therefore battery. Turning them off is particularly effective on older devices.
iPhone: Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion (on). This also automatically enables Reduce Transparency, which simplifies some background blur effects.
The change is subtle visually, but you’ll still get smooth navigation — just with simpler transitions instead of animated swoops.
9. Use Dark Mode on an OLED Screen
If your phone has an OLED display (iPhone 12 and later, Samsung Galaxy S and A series, most modern flagships), dark mode genuinely saves battery — sometimes noticeably.
The reason is specific to OLED technology: unlike LCD screens that backlight the entire display, OLED screens light each pixel individually. For black pixels, the pixel is simply turned off. A dark theme means large portions of the screen are displaying black, which means those pixels are drawing no power at all.
iPhone: Settings > Display & Brightness > Dark. Android: Settings > Display > Dark Mode.
On LCD screens, dark mode has no real impact on battery, since the backlight is always on regardless of what’s displayed.
10. Keep Your Phone Away from Extreme Temperatures
Cold weather temporarily reduces battery capacity — you may have noticed your phone dying faster in winter. But heat causes permanent, irreversible damage to lithium-ion cells.
Leaving your phone on a dashboard in summer sun, charging under a pillow, or carrying it somewhere that gets very warm can meaningfully accelerate battery aging. The ideal operating temperature is roughly 16-22°C.
This isn’t about avoiding the cold — that effect reverses when the phone warms up. It’s about avoiding sustained heat, which degrades the battery’s maximum capacity permanently over time.
11. Use Wi-Fi Instead of Mobile Data Where Possible
For the same amount of data transferred, Wi-Fi uses less power than a mobile data connection. The mobile radio has to communicate with a cell tower potentially hundreds of metres away; Wi-Fi communicates with a router a few metres away. The difference in signal effort adds up over a day.
When you’re at home or in a trusted location, make sure Wi-Fi is connected and in use.
12. Check Your Battery Usage Stats
The most useful battery tip of all is simply knowing which apps are actually using your battery.
iPhone: Settings > Battery — scroll down to see apps sorted by battery usage over the last 24 hours or 10 days. You may find an app consuming 25% of your battery that you only used for five minutes — which suggests it’s running aggressively in the background.
Android: Settings > Battery > Battery Usage. The layout varies by manufacturer but the information is there.
Once you know the culprits, you can decide whether to restrict their background access, delete them, or switch to alternatives that are less battery-hungry.
When Tips Aren’t Enough
If you’ve worked through this list and your battery still won’t carry you through the day, the honest answer may be that the battery itself is genuinely worn out. Lithium-ion cells have a finite lifespan, and no settings change can restore lost capacity.
