We fix iPhones and Samsungs every day at GenioTech. Between those two brands, we probably account for the majority of the phones that come through our door — which means we’ve had an unusually good seat from which to observe how each brand holds up in the real world. Not in a lab. Not in a controlled drop test with a brand-new device. In actual daily life, with actual Dundee weather, actual dropped pints, and actual people who use their phones hard.
So which one breaks more? The honest answer is more nuanced than you might expect — but we can tell you exactly where each brand excels and where each one fails.
Screen Durability
Both Apple and Samsung invest heavily in screen glass, and both have made meaningful improvements over the years. But they’ve taken slightly different approaches.
Samsung has used Corning’s Gorilla Glass on most of its lineup for years. Gorilla Glass is genuinely tough — it’s chemically strengthened, harder than standard glass, and improves with each generation. Most current mid-range and flagship Samsung devices use Gorilla Glass Victus or a similar recent generation, which Samsung and Corning both claim is among the toughest smartphone glass available.
Apple introduced Ceramic Shield with the iPhone 12, manufactured in partnership with Corning. Apple claims Ceramic Shield offers four times better drop performance than previous iPhone glass, and in our experience, it does hold up somewhat better in drop tests compared to older iPhones. The Ceramic Shield gets used on the front glass of iPhone 12 and later models — the back glass on the same phones doesn’t use Ceramic Shield, which is why backs still crack easily.
In real-world terms, based on what we see come through the door, the difference in screen durability between current flagship iPhones and current flagship Samsungs is not dramatic. Both brands’ screens crack on concrete drops from waist height. Both survive plenty of drops onto softer surfaces and at lower angles. The biggest factor is whether the phone is in a case, not the brand.
Where we do notice a difference is at the budget and mid-range level. Budget Samsung phones — particularly older A-series devices — tend to use older generations of glass or cheaper alternatives that scratch and crack more readily than their flagship counterparts. Apple doesn’t really have a “budget” tier in the same sense, so every current iPhone gets a relatively premium level of glass protection.
What about the back?
iPhone backs from the iPhone 8 onwards are glass, and they break. A lot. In fact, cracked backs are something we see disproportionately more of on iPhones than on Samsungs, partly because many Samsung models — particularly mid-range devices — use polycarbonate (plastic) backs rather than glass. Plastic backs don’t shatter. They scuff, they flex, they age — but they don’t spider-web dramatically in a fall the way glass does.
Samsung’s glass-backed flagship models do crack, but the back glass replacement process on many Samsung phones is more straightforward than on newer iPhones, where it’s a very involved job. We’ve covered that in detail in our repair services guide.
Battery Longevity
This is an area where both brands perform similarly, though with some important nuances.
iPhone batteries are well-calibrated and consistently managed. Apple’s software handles battery charging intelligently — the optimised charging feature learns your habits and slows the final charge phase to reduce wear. In our experience, iPhones tend to reach the 80% battery health threshold after roughly two to three years of typical use. That’s the point where most users notice significant degradation in real-world battery life.
Samsung flagship batteries follow a broadly similar timeline. However, there’s more variance across Samsung’s lineup than across Apple’s. A Samsung Galaxy S-series phone often holds its battery capacity well. Budget Samsung A-series devices with smaller batteries can degrade noticeably faster under heavy use, sometimes within eighteen months.
One thing iPhones have in their favour is transparency. The Battery Health percentage in Settings gives you an exact, reliable figure. Samsung’s equivalent information is less straightforward to access without third-party apps or entering diagnostic mode — which means many Samsung users don’t know their battery is degraded until the symptoms are obvious.
Charging Port Durability
Both brands use USB-C on their current devices — Samsung has been on USB-C for years, and Apple switched with the iPhone 15 in 2023. Before that, iPhones used the Lightning connector.
From our repair experience, Lightning ports were actually somewhat more prone to damage than USB-C. The Lightning connector uses a narrow pin design that was more susceptible to bending if the cable was pulled at an angle repeatedly. We repaired a lot of Lightning port damage over the years. USB-C’s symmetrical design and wider contact area tends to be more robust.
That said, debris buildup — pocket lint packed into the port — affects both connectors equally. We see charging port issues on both iPhone and Samsung at similar rates. The fix is usually either a gentle clean or a port replacement, depending on the extent of the problem.
Water Resistance — What the Ratings Actually Mean in Practice
Both Apple and Samsung offer IP-rated water resistance on their current flagship devices, and the ratings are genuine — they’re tested to real standards. The question we get asked is whether one brand’s water resistance is more dependable than the other’s in practice.
The truthful answer is that neither brand’s water resistance should be trusted as absolute protection in everyday situations. IP ratings are tested on new devices in controlled conditions with clean, still water. Real life involves saltwater, rain (which hits with more pressure than still submersion), beer, coffee, and the gradual degradation of the phone’s seals over time.
We see water-damaged iPhones and water-damaged Samsungs in roughly proportionate numbers. Neither brand covers water damage under warranty, regardless of IP rating — check your manufacturer’s terms and you’ll find it clearly excluded. Both brands’ phones can and do suffer water damage. Neither is dramatically better than the other in the real-world scenarios we see.
Software Reliability and Its Effect on Hardware
This is a factor that doesn’t get discussed often in the context of hardware durability, but it matters.
iPhones run iOS, which Apple controls entirely — the software is optimised specifically for the hardware it runs on. This tight integration means that software issues rarely create hardware problems on iPhones. It does happen, but it’s uncommon.
Android is more complex. Samsung phones run Samsung’s version of Android (One UI) layered on top of Google’s Android, and the added complexity means there’s slightly more variability. We see software-caused issues on Samsung phones — particularly older models that haven’t received updates in a while — that occasionally interact with hardware in problematic ways. Boot loops, failed updates causing bricking issues, and camera malfunctions linked to software are all things we encounter more frequently on Android than on iOS.
This doesn’t mean Samsung phones have bad software — modern One UI is polished and capable. But the architecture of an open platform with more variables does create more edge cases.
Which Is More Expensive to Repair?
Here both brands are fairly even, though for different reasons.
An iPhone Pro Max screen replacement is among the more expensive screen repairs we carry out, partly because the part itself is costly and partly because the OLED quality is extremely high. A Samsung Galaxy Ultra screen is similarly expensive, with the added complexity of curved OLED and the adhesive process involved in Samsung displays.
Mid-range repairs are more affordable on both brands. An iPhone 12 screen or a Samsung A-series screen replacement both sit at more accessible price points.
Back glass is where iPhones become significantly more expensive to repair than most Samsungs, because of the full disassembly required on recent iPhone models. A Samsung back glass replacement is often much more straightforward.
The Verdict
Neither iPhone nor Samsung is dramatically more durable than the other in overall terms. Each brand has areas of relative strength and areas of relative weakness. iPhones tend to hold up better on software reliability and screen quality at every price tier. Samsungs at the mid-range benefit from plastic backs that don’t shatter and USB-C ports that have proven reliable. Both brands’ screens crack under similar conditions. Both batteries degrade at similar rates.
What makes the biggest single difference to how long your phone stays unbroken is whether you use a case. A good case — particularly one that wraps around the edges and raises the screen slightly off a flat surface — prevents the majority of significant damage regardless of which brand you’re carrying. Add a tempered glass screen protector, and you’ve done more to protect your phone than any manufacturer’s glass improvement could.
