Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup landed in September 2025, and it’s one of the bigger shakeups the iPhone range has seen in years. There’s a whole new model — the ultra-thin iPhone Air — a more affordable iPhone 17e that launched in March 2026, and meaningful changes across the Pro lineup. If you’ve been holding onto an iPhone 14 or 15 and wondering whether now’s the time to upgrade, here’s our honest take from a shop that fixes, handles, and sees iPhones every single day.
The iPhone 17 Lineup: Four Models, Different People
Before diving into the changes, it’s worth understanding that the iPhone 17 range isn’t just two or three phones anymore. You’ve got the standard iPhone 17, the ultra-slim iPhone Air, the performance-focused iPhone 17 Pro, and the top-of-the-range iPhone 17 Pro Max. Then there’s the iPhone 17e — a more budget-friendly option that launched a few months after the main lineup.
That’s actually a good thing for most buyers. Apple is acknowledging that not everyone wants the same phone, and the different form factors give you genuine choices rather than just “small or big.”
Design: The Camera Bar Is the Big Change
The most obvious visual change across the iPhone 17 lineup is the new camera bar — a wide rectangular strip that stretches across the entire back of the phone, housing the camera system. On the Pro models, this replaces the familiar square camera island. It’s a polarising design; some people love the more horizontal, symmetrical look, others find it unusual. Either way, it’s distinctive.
The base iPhone 17 keeps an all-aluminium body — a welcome return to a material that feels premium without the added weight of titanium. The Pro models switch from the titanium used in the 15 and 16 Pro to a brushed aluminium alloy combined with glass, which is lighter and still feels high-quality.
The iPhone Air is the real show-stopper for design enthusiasts. It’s genuinely slim — one of the thinnest phones Apple has ever made — using a titanium-aluminium alloy frame. If you want something that feels different in the hand and in a pocket, the Air delivers that. It does make some compromises (battery capacity and camera system are dialled back compared to the Pro), but as a daily phone it’s excellent.
Performance: A19 and A19 Pro Chips
Every iPhone 17 model gets a new chip. The standard models and the Air run the A19, while the Pro and Pro Max use the A19 Pro. Both are significant improvements over the A18 and A17 chips in last year’s phones — faster, more efficient, and better at handling the on-device AI processing that Apple Intelligence relies on.
In day-to-day use, the performance improvement over an iPhone 15 is very noticeable. Apps open faster, multitasking is snappier, and the phone stays cooler under load thanks to improved thermal management. The Pro models in particular include a vapour chamber cooling system that’s a genuine engineering achievement in a phone this thin.
If you’re upgrading from an iPhone 13 or 14, the performance difference will be dramatic. Coming from a 15? Still meaningful, but less dramatic.
Cameras: A Major Upgrade on Pro Models
The camera story for iPhone 17 is most compelling on the Pro and Pro Max. Apple has moved to a triple 48MP sensor system — main, ultrawide, and telephoto — which represents a significant jump in image quality, particularly for video and low-light shooting. The optical zoom has improved too, with up to 8x optical zoom on the Pro Max.
The base iPhone 17 and Air get meaningful camera improvements too, but the Pro models are where Apple has really pushed things forward. If you’re a keen photographer or regularly shoot video, the Pro camera system is worth the extra money.
Battery Life: Better Across the Board
Battery life has been a genuine weak point on some previous iPhones, particularly the standard size models. The iPhone 17 addresses this with larger cell capacities and more efficient chips. In real-world testing, most iPhone 17 users are getting through a full day comfortably, with many managing well into a second day on lighter use.
The iPhone Air is a slight exception — the slim profile means a smaller battery, so heavy users may find they need a charge before bed. But for average use, it’s more than adequate.
iOS 26: The Software Side
The iPhone 17 ships with iOS 26, which brings a refreshed visual design alongside expanded Apple Intelligence features. The AI-powered tools — writing assistance, enhanced Siri, smarter photo editing — are genuinely useful rather than just impressive demos. We’ll cover Apple Intelligence in more detail in a separate post, but the short version is that the software makes the hardware feel meaningfully better.
What About Repairability?
This is something we think about a lot, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag with the iPhone 17.
The shift to the camera bar design means that if you drop your phone and damage the rear camera area, repairs could be more involved than with previous models. The bar spans the full width of the phone, so the repair is a slightly more complex procedure. Screen replacements and battery swaps are broadly similar in complexity to iPhone 15 and 16, which is reassuring.
Apple’s Right to Repair commitments mean that genuine parts are more accessible than they were a few years ago, which is good news. That said, the Pro models are more tightly integrated and slightly more complex to work on than the standard models.
One thing we notice at GenioTech: the camera glass on the bar-style camera housing is more exposed at the edges than the previous island design, which means it’s more vulnerable to cracking if the phone is dropped on a hard surface. Should You Upgrade?
Upgrading from iPhone 14 or older? Yes, absolutely. The performance, camera, and battery improvements are substantial. You’ll notice the difference immediately.
Upgrading from iPhone 15? It depends. If you’re on the base iPhone 15, the A19 chip and camera improvements are a genuine step up. If you’re on the 15 Pro or Pro Max, the upgrade is less compelling unless you specifically want the Air form factor or the latest camera system.
Upgrading from iPhone 16? Probably not worth it unless there’s something specific about the Air’s design or the new camera system that you really want. The iPhone 16 is still an excellent phone.
On an older phone with a cracked screen or failing battery? Before upgrading, it’s worth getting your current phone repaired.
