When something goes wrong with your phone, the cost matters — but for most people, the bigger anxiety is how long they’ll be without it. Your phone isn’t just a communication device. It’s your maps, your banking app, your work emails, your alarm clock, your camera. Being without it for even a few hours is genuinely disruptive.
So let’s be straight about repair times, because there’s a lot of vague reassurance in the phone repair world and not enough specificity. The honest answer is that repair time depends heavily on what’s being repaired, what model you have, and what parts are in stock. Here’s a realistic breakdown of how long each common repair takes — and why.
Screen Replacements
Screen replacement is the repair we’re asked about most often, and the good news is that for the majority of phones, it’s one of the fastest.
For most iPhone models — anything from the iPhone 8 through to the iPhone 14 series — a screen replacement typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes in our hands. We’ve done enough of them that the process is efficient and methodical. You can wait in the shop for many models.
Samsung screen replacements take a little longer, and it’s worth understanding why. Samsung’s flagship models use curved OLED displays that are bonded to the digitiser (the touch layer) using a heat-activated adhesive. Separating the old display cleanly without damaging the frame requires careful application of heat and time. Attaching the new display correctly and allowing the adhesive to set properly also takes time. Rush this, and you risk bubbling, poor adhesion, or a display that lifts at the edges after a few weeks. For Samsung Galaxy S-series and A-series mid-range models with OLED panels, expect 45 to 90 minutes for a proper job.
Budget Android phones with LCD screens are generally quicker — similar timescales to iPhones, sometimes faster because the parts are simpler to work with.
Battery Replacements
Battery replacement is one of the quickest repairs we do. For most iPhones and Android phones, it’s a 20 to 40 minute job. The phone needs to be opened, the old battery disconnected and removed, and the new one seated and tested before we hand it back.
There are exceptions. Some phones — particularly some Samsung models and a handful of other Android devices — use very strong adhesive to secure the battery, which slows things down slightly. And occasionally, a battery has swollen enough that removal requires extra care to avoid puncturing the cell. But in the vast majority of cases, if you come in for a battery replacement, you’ll be back on your way in under an hour.
Charging Port Replacement
Charging port repairs typically take 30 to 60 minutes for most models. The variation comes from how accessible the port is on the specific phone. On some models, the charging port is a separate, easily accessed component. On others, it’s soldered directly to the motherboard, which requires a different approach and more time.
We’ll assess your specific model and give you an accurate estimate when you come in. In most cases, it’s still a same-day repair.
Back Glass Replacement
If you’ve cracked the back of an iPhone — and this applies particularly to iPhones from the iPhone 8 onwards, which all have glass backs — be prepared for a longer turnaround than you might expect.
Back glass replacement on iPhones from the iPhone 11, 12, 13, and 14 series is a substantial job. The reason is that accessing the back glass from the inside requires removing the entire internal assembly of the phone — battery, logic board, cameras, display, everything. You’re essentially taking the phone apart completely to get to the glass from behind. This can take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the specific model and condition of the phone.
We know this surprises people. The damage looks like a simple cracked piece of glass at the back of the phone. But from a repair perspective, it’s one of the most involved jobs we do. We’d rather tell you that upfront than have you pop in expecting to wait 30 minutes and find yourself waiting most of the afternoon.
Water Damage Assessment and Repair
Water damage is the most unpredictable repair in terms of time, because the extent of the damage isn’t visible from the outside. When you bring in a water-damaged phone, the first step is a diagnostic — opening the phone, inspecting the board and components for moisture and corrosion, and assessing what we’re dealing with.
That initial diagnosis takes one to two hours. If the damage is relatively minor — surface moisture with no significant corrosion — a thorough board clean and dry may be all that’s needed, and we might have the phone back to you the same day. If there’s significant corrosion on the logic board, the repair becomes more complex and may take longer — sometimes we’ll need to keep it overnight to allow for a full clean and drying process.
We’ll always give you a clear picture of where things stand as soon as the diagnosis is complete. We don’t keep phones any longer than necessary.
Software Issues
Software problems are genuinely variable. Some software faults — a stuck update, a boot loop, a recovery mode issue — can be resolved in ten to fifteen minutes with the right tools and approach. Others, particularly phones that have been locked out or need a more involved software restoration, can take longer.
If your phone needs a factory reset, the reset and restore process itself can take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the amount of data and the speed of your connection.
We’ll assess software issues on the spot and give you an honest estimate. Sometimes the fix is quick and we’ll sort it while you wait. Other times, if it’s going to take a while, we’ll take a number and call you when it’s ready.
Camera Replacement
Camera replacements — rear main camera, front camera, or telephoto lens — typically take 30 to 60 minutes for most models. The variation comes from how the specific camera module is mounted and connected. On some phones, particularly newer flagships with multiple camera arrays, the module is accessible without major disassembly. On others, more of the phone needs to come apart to reach it. Either way, it’s usually a same-day repair.
What Slows Repairs Down
Beyond the technical complexity of the repair itself, a few things can add time to any job.
Parts availability. We stock parts for the most common models — current and recent iPhones, popular Samsung Galaxy models, and other frequently seen phones. For older models, less common phones, or specific colour variants, we may need to order a part, which typically adds a day or two. We’ll always tell you upfront if that’s the case.
Discovering additional damage during the repair. Sometimes what looks like a single issue turns out to involve more than one. A cracked screen might come in with a damaged housing frame underneath. A battery replacement might reveal a corroded connector that needs attention. We’ll stop and communicate with you rather than proceeding without your knowledge.
Older or unusual models. Less common models take more time because they’re less familiar, parts can be harder to source, and disassembly sequences vary.
A Word About “1-Hour Everything” Claims
You’ll sometimes see repair shops advertising that every repair is done in one hour, guaranteed. We understand the appeal of that promise, but it isn’t always truthful, and chasing speed on certain repairs creates real risk.
Some repairs genuinely cannot be safely rushed. Samsung OLED adhesive needs time to set. Swollen batteries need careful handling. Board-level work can’t be hurried without risking further damage. A shop that tells you every repair takes an hour regardless of the job is either cutting corners or setting an expectation they won’t always meet. Neither is ideal.
We’d rather give you an accurate estimate and deliver on it than promise a time we can’t always keep.
